Building your career:
Building a career
is a process. While most of the resources here are
designed to help you find and get a job, that job should
be just one step in a career building process.
Your career goals are a
mix of finding the right salary and finding the right
company. The right company will pay you the right salary
if you have the right skills. You can prove that you
have the right skills by your education, training, certifications,
and most importantly, EXPERIENCE. College education we
think is the best route. If you only have your industry
certifications, coupled with built upon experience, you
can do just as well as if you did have a college
degree!
So, career building is
essentially adding experience to your resume until you
have the right experience to land the right job with the
right company.
Look for jobs that
will build experience.
In career building, you are looking for jobs that allow
you to work with technologies that are in demand. Look
to build your skill set and get hands-on with the equipment
and technologies.
Know when to Leave
When you take a job for career building, you need to
know when to leave. Go into the job ready to learn
everything you can. Work with the systems, equipment,
software. When you fell comfortable with the technology
and methods that you work with, you should begin looking
to improve your position.
Don't get stagnant
Many people make the mistake of trying to "Work
your way up the ladder". Very few companies will
promote you as fast as you deserve. If a promotion is
available, that's great. If a promotion is not
immediately available, begin looking for the better job.
You should look for a
position that improves your pay as well as your
responsibility. Don't take a job just because it pays
better, though. You want to build your salary as well as
your skills.
Don't burn bridges
The opinions of your past employers and coworkers
will be important as you build your career. Be careful
not to leave a company on bad terms.
In your career, you may
find yourself returning to the same company in a better
position on different department, or you may find some
of your coworkers in new companies years later.
Get a witness
While you are with a company, you will want to
establish references. Identify people who can be
contacted by prospective employers, who will give a
positive impression of your abilities and work ethic. If
possible, ask for letters of recommendation.
Get good at it
Career building is important. You have to take it
seriously. Figure out where you want to be in three
years, five years, and ten years. Plan your career, and
put in the effort it takes to get where you want to be.
