Microsoft Certifications:

MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) is Microsoft's most popular certification. This cert requires 7 tests. Click here for MCSE details

MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) is like MCSE lite. It measures most of the same skills as MCSE, but requires fewer tests. Click here for MCSA details

MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician) - Announced in October, 2003, Microsoft has just added the MCDST Certification to it's line of IT Certs. If you are just starting your certification path, or if you're trying to collect them all, you only need to pass two tests for this one! Click here for MCDST details

MCTS - For the 2005 Certifications, Microsoft has implemented the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist certification. These include programming in .NET, SQL 2005, Biztalk, and Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005. Click here for MCTS details

MCDBA (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator) confirms database design and management skills using MS SQL Server. There's four tests needed, and this certification is gaining in popularity. Click here for MCDBA details

MCAD (Microsoft Certified Applications Developer) is the newest programming certification. If you know Visual Basic or C# (C Sharp), you can gain this certification with only three tests! MCAD replaces MCSD. Click here for MCAD details

MCT (Microsoft Certified Trainer) - You must already hold one of the Microsoft premier certifications (MCSA, MCSE, MCDBA, or MCAD). You will then need to attend a Train the Trainer course, and pay a $400 US application fee. Click here for MCT information

Cisco Certifications:
Cisco certifications are helpful for people who want to build a career in Internetworking, working with routers and switches to connect networks and build large company solutions.

CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) The first level in Cisco certification. One exam is required. This is a great certification to add a little extra to an IT resume. Similar to an AS degree in Cisco. Click here for CCNA details

CCNP - (Cisco Certified Network Professional) is for people who are starting a career in internetworking technologies. Equivalent to an undergraduate degree in Cisco .

CCIE - (Cisco Certified Internetworking Engineer) is for those who want a strong career in internetworking. This certification will take a few years to complete for even the best and brightest. Equivalent to a graduate degree in networking.

CompTIA Certifications:
CompTIA is a non-vendor specific organization that offers a variety of certifications in IT and related fields, most well known for their A+ certification.

A+ (A plus) The A+ certification demonstrates knowledge of basic computer systems for technical support roles. There are two A+ exams, the core hardware exam, and the Operating systems exam.

Network+ (Network Plus) is based on general networking knowledge. Though it probably won't get you a job by itself, it doesn't hurt to have it on your resume.

Server+ (Server Plus) demonstrates your understanding of network servers, and includes hardware, networking and operating systems knowledge.

New Wireless Certifications:
In addition to the most common certifications listed above, there are a few independent and vendor specific certifications to help to qualify you for the industry.  CWNP(Certified Wireless Network Professional) program is a great new certification. Companies are getting concerned about their wireless connectivity solutions and security. On your resume, this says that you have the bases covered. With this program, you can attain your certifications. Click here to read more about these new certs.
