Accessing an RSS news feed from an ASP.NET web page.

Want to display up to date news and information on your ASP.NET web site?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. An RSS feed is a dynamic XML document that fits a specific format (schema)., which you can easily read into an ADO.NET dataset.

For this example, we use the Yahoo News feed from http://rss.news.yahoo.com/rss/topstories.

This example assumes that you have a label on your page named Label1.

Label1.Text = ""
Dim DS As New DataSet
DS.ReadXml("http://rss.news.yahoo.com/rss/topstories")
For x As Integer = 0 To DS.Tables("item").Rows.Count - 1
Label1.Text &= "
"
Label1.Text &= DS.Tables("item").Rows(x).Item("title") & "
"
Label1.Text &= DS.Tables("item").Rows(x).Item("description") & "
"
Next

In an RSS news feed, the XML format contains an element (table) named item, which has sub-elements (columns) named Link, Title, and Description. This code uses the linl and title to build a hyperlink to the news story, and then displays the description.

The RSS xml Schema:
